Just got back from recording a one hour debate on evolution and religion for the BBC. It is due to be aired next Sunday morning. I was sitting alongside Science rock stars Matt Ridley, Professor Steve Jones and someone to definitely watch out for, Dr Robert Asher. Also in the studio were a number of Christian and Muslim creationists and ID followers. It was a good debate and I will post a more detailed blog after it airs, insha’ Allah.

The title of the video is admittedly rather tasteless, and has been objected to even by anti-evolutionist Muslims. The official video of the full event has not yet been released by the Deen Institute.
I think sometimes that people read the Bible etc and forget when they were written and what the level of understaning of the audience at the time was. Also, these books gave a frame work for people to use in their daily lives. Hence the world created in 6 days and rest on the 7th gives us an ideal ‘working week’ but the audience at the time would have had no concept of billions of years. What ‘God’ would create a world that miss lead it’s inhabitants who ‘ created in God’s image’ would be as curious and intelligent and naturally would explore and try to make sense of the world and universe around them. I think science is understanding the ‘how’ but the ‘why’ becomes much more difficult and that leads to the questions around God. Of course if there is a God, why did he make the universe so big? We would need to be immortal to travel those distances – oh we were once weren’t we until Adam ate the apple!
